All Dogs Come from Heaven

Ok maybe that isn't quite right but I think it should be.. I know they all go to heaven because seriously why wouldn't they .. so why can't they all come from there too. I at the very least know that Banx and Charlie did.

Everyone here knows Banx and how is was my little snuggle man on the saddest days right there beside me helping me through the darkness. When I cried, he snuggled harder trying to wipe away the tears. Banx is now and always will be my main man, but we do have a new addition to the family. Meet Charlie George.

Last Wednesday after bootcamp I was at the coffee shop with dear friends when up walked "George" with his Foster Dad Darrell, I think it was love at first site. Banx and George immediately hit it off. When I started paying attention I realized that George did not have a Forever Home. On a crazy whim I just said.. "How do I get him?" Foster Dad said "Go to the western part of the state and ... " Me.. "No how do I get HIM?" I think Darrell was a bit shocked and not sure I was serious. Thank heavens for my friendly Donut Chris for speaking up and saying "No man I think she is serious she wants HIM." Those were the first seconds with George.

Foster Darrell and I spoke for a little while and then George and I went home to meet the boys, unfortunately Dustin had already gone to work so he got a picture and a phone call, explaining that I had him a new running partner at home and that he was a Pit Mix and would he like to have him. He took one look at his pic and  immediately said "SOLD!" Drake was here in the living room already loving on him.

(Side note: No Banx was physically or emotionally harmed in this story he had plenty of loving and attention during all of this but this is Charlie's story.)

I spoke to Foster Darrell on and off through the day, each time saying.. he is great and I really want George (who by that time had a new name of Charlie according to Dustin. His name was inspired from the song Charlie by the Red Hot Chill Peppers:

Charlie (you can hear it here it will open in a new window)

And Charlie from All Dogs go to Heaven.

I knew that Dustin was wanting a pup of his own and my heart had already melted for Charlie George with in an hour of him being here, but he had been a stray and had not been to the vet yet. I called Banx's Doc and they would see Charlie that afternoon, I knew I needed to take him before the boys got too attached, and probably should have taken him before even bringing him up. On the way to vet we stopped at Pet Smart for a few new items for our new family member and a couple of treats for Banx for being such a good boy.

Once we got to the office and had some blood drawn it was only a matter of minutes before the tech came back and told me that Charlie was sick. He had heartworms. I sat there with him for a few minutes just looking at him pleading with me to please help him. The tears started to fall, I knew that the only way to help Charlie was to put him down and save him from the misery of the heart worms or the pain of the treatment. I had only been in his company for a couple of hours but my heart was breaking into a million pieces. How could this big lug be sick? How could this beautiful creature have to come and go from my life so quickly? How could I hold him telling him it would be ok knowing that it wasn't?

In pops Doc Welch who takes one look at me and hands me a box of tissues and says "WHAT is wrong???" My first thought was .. "seriously dude how can you be so nonchalant?? I have to hand this amazing pup to you and I will never see him again?? WHAT DO YOU THINK IS WRONG??" I did manage to mutter a couple of words about heart worms and putting him down.. and he says.. "WAIT A MINUTE.. why do you think we have to put him down, we aren't putting him down, we are going to treat him!!" I guess the fact that the only experience I have had with heart worms was roughly 30 some odd years ago and that was not a good one I thought it meant the end like it did back then. Turns out that isn't the case at all! Easy treatment because he is so young and we will be good as new. After the emotionally draining evening at the vet (thank you Dr Welch, the Nags Head Animal Hospital and all your staff for making the outcome SOOOO much better!) we all came home and just snuggled around. Foster Darrell checked in again and I explained about the heart worm issue, that is when I found out from him that Charlie George had been running and playing in open yards and never coughed or hacked or slowed down in anyway. Another HUGE plus according to Dr Welch, I was so relieved our beautiful boy was going to be ok!

I had called my daddy when I was at the vet .. just crying and he calmed me down and explained that he was going to be ok, saying the same things Dr Welch was explaining. After the office visit was over I called Daddy back and said he was right everything would be ok and that we just needed to fix Charlie's broken heart so he could help fix ours.

It was after this that I learned a bit more of Charlie George's story. Charlie George appeared at his Foster Mom's house in western NC on a terribly sad day, the day of her father's funeral. He brought with him love and peace, but Foster Mom already had a full house of pups so it was a temporary situation that everyone understood from the start, but John Dog needed a name, in honor and memory of her Dad he was named George, by the time I heard the entire story of George's name, Charlie had already stuck with us, so in the honor of his Foster Mom and Dad I said we are going to have us a full on Southern Pup and his name is Charlie George!

I do have to give a big shout out to Kami, Chris and Leslie who were all present when Charlie George found his new forever home. Without you guys I know he wouldn't be with us... I would have never had the guts to say.. "dude I want that dog" without you there.

Since coming home Charlie George has brightened all of our days, playing with Banx, long walks with me, wrestling and running with Dustin and just loving and listening to Drake when he wants to sit down and chat. (we won't talk about the Kittum incident, but she will come around in her own time, that is what she does). There is just no doubt in my mind this pup was sent right to us from heaven!

So if you see me on the beach carrying a little pup and chasing down a big pup.. just wave and smile because THIS is healing my heart!!

Welcome to your forever home Charlie, thanks for being a heart breaker, heart stealer and a heart healer!!!

Much love to you all!!!
